Roberto Carlos Reveals He Was Close To Joining Chelsea

Brazil icon Roberto Carlos has revealed he was close to joining Premier League outfit Chelsea in the summer of 2007 on a free transfer.

Carlos left Spain in 2007 after playing for La Liga giants Real Madrid for eleven years. The legendary defender was a free agent at that time and had a meeting with Roman Abramovich and (former chief executive) Peter Kenyon, for a potential move to Stamford Bridge, but anything of that sort could not happen.

The former Inter Milan man eventually joined Turkish side Fenerbahce, where he played for two years before he moved on to his next adventure.

“I had two proposals, Fenerbahce and Chelsea," the 47-year-old told Goal after the Challenge Heineken Legends. "Chelsea did not work out so I signed for Fenerbahce.”

"But, with Chelsea, it got very close. It was literally agreed and I just had to go there and sign the contract.”

"It was just a week before I signed for Fenerbahce and I had been to Paris to meet both Roman Abramovich and Peter Kenyon.”

"Unfortunately, in the final moments something did not work out just before finalizing, which happens a lot in football. There was an issue with the lawyer.”

"It was all agreed, though, and I am 100 per cent sure I would have done well in the Premier League and it would have suited my characteristics."
