The 27-year-old has announced a change in agent, signing up with the renowned Rena Fazeli, who has been tasked with finding him a new club.
Gotze is in his second spell as a Dortmund player, having initially departed for a three-year spell at Bayern Munich in 2013 before returning to the Signal Iduna Park in 2016 on a four-year contract.
Gotze has been a shadow of his former self since his return as he has battled injuries and struggled to hold down a regular place in the Dortmund first team.
Announcing his intentions on social media, Gotze said: “First of all, I hope according to the circumstances that you and your loved ones are doing well in the present situation.
“Today I would like to announce that after intensive consideration, I have decided to make a change in the planning of my career. I have consciously taken my time over this step.
“It is an important decision for my sporting future and I am very much looking forward to working with Reza Fazeli and his agency International Soccer Management (ISM), whose professional competence has absolutely convinced me.
“What the sporting future will bring will only become apparent when a little normality has returned to the world.
“Until then, please stay healthy and support society as much as you can.”
Gotze has made 13 appearances for second-placed Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season, scoring three goals.
He famously scored the winning goal when Germany beat Argentina to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
