Mikel Obi Terminates Trabzonspor Contract Over Coronavirus Fears

John Obi Mikel has terminated his contract with Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor over fears of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Mikel expressed his discontent on Saturday over the decision to allow the Turkish top flight to continue, albeit behind closed doors.

Most of Europe’s top leagues have been suspended to prevent the spread of the virus while UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches have all been called off.

Turkey’s coronavirus cases have increased from six over the weekend to 47.

The former Chelsea midfielder’s statement on Saturday read: 'There is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and don't want to play football in this situation. Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones at this critical time. Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times.'

Mikel’s statement received support from Galatasaray striker Radamel Falcao and his former Chelsea teammate Didier Drogba.

The 32-year-old joined Trabzonspor on a free transfer last summer, signing a two-year contract.

Mikel has been instrumental in helping Trabzonspor to the top of the Turkish league, making 19 top flight appearances.

“The professional football player agreement between our company and John Obi Mikel on 30.06.2019 start date 31.05.2021 has been mutually terminated. With a mutual termination agreement, the football player gave up all his forward-looking receivables,” the club announced.

Mikel won two Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge, and he also helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.
