Van Dijk Fears Liverpool Will Lift Title In Empty Stadium

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk says he is worried about the prospect of lifting the Premier League title in an empty stadium.

The Reds are 25 points clear at the top of the table and need just two more wins to be crowned English champions for the first time in three decades.

But the Premier League has been suspended until at least April 3 because the Coronavirus pandemic has showed no signs of slowing down.

The football authorities are due to meet on Thursday to decide on the way forward and one of the proposals on the table is playing games behind closed doors in order to complete the season.

The UK government is also expected to ban mass gatherings for a period of time from Monday, meaning Liverpool fans could miss the crowning moment when their beloved club end their long wait for the league title.

“If we won it in an empty stadium and the fans weren’t there, I’d be gutted for them,” Van Dijk said.

“Obviously, if there are no fans at Anfield, then it will be a bit of a blow – no one wants to play games without the fans.

“Until a decision is made on how we go on from here, then we just have to deal with it. But when it happens, we are still bringing the title to our fans, definitely.”

"We all have to be sensible and deal with it with common sense. If the authorities make that judgement, we just have to deal with it and accept it."
