Vertonghen was an unused substitute at the Red Bull Arena as Jose Mourinho’s men crashed out of the competition after RB Leipzig battered them 3-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.
Vertonghen’s services might have been needed elsewhere though as his wife, Sophie De Vries, and two children were accosted in their home by four individuals wearing balaclavas and wielding knives and machetes.
No one was hurt in the incident but it is believed the robbers made away with valuable items with police now seeking information from the public to assist in investigations.
A spokesperson for the Met Police said: "Police were called to a residential address in NW3 at 7.49pm on 10 March to a report of a burglary.
"Officers attended. It was reported four men wearing balaclavas, armed with knives, had forced entry to the property and stolen a number of items before leaving.
"Nobody was injured. The suspects had left the scene before officers arrived. There have been no arrests and inquiries continue."
Vertonghen is expected to leave Tottenham when his contract expires in the summer.
The Belgian is the latest Premier League footballer to be targeted by robbers this season after Crystal Palace defender Mamadou Sakho suffered the same fate earlier in the campaign.
Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac also escaped unhurt after being confronted by carjackers in July.
