Paul Merson: Chelsea Must Sign ‘Wantaway’ Cavani

Former Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Paul Merson has advised Chelsea to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, who has handed in a transfer request to leave the Ligue 1 outfit.

Cavani is PSG’s all-time top scorer but has fallen down the pecking order following last summer’s arrival of Inter Milan loanee Mauro Icardi.

The Uruguayan joined the Ligue 1 champions from Napoli in 2013 and his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Chelsea have fallen short in front of goals and with their recent yo-yoing form coupled with condemnable defeats against bottom sides like Bournemouth, Southampton, Newcastle and West Ham United, the 51-year-old believes Cavani could be an instant remedy to their top four hopes.

“The main priority now is to get into the top four,” Merson wrote in his column on Sky Sports.

“At the start when Frank first took over with the young kids, it was just a transition year with young players. And it was sort of a free swing.”

“But now they are in the top four and a good position - they have struggled in the games they have lost - to Newcastle, West Ham, Southampton, Bournemouth and they have not really looked like scoring in those games.”

“So going forward a centre forward - they are talking about Cavani and when a player of that class and they do not come up that often, especially in January, for me I think it is an absolute must.”

“And if you can get a Cavani in to teach Tammy Abraham - someone big and strong who holds the ball up, put the ball in the box and he will put his head in there. And I just think it is a no-brainer.”
