Injured Liverpool Fan Sean Cox To Make Anfield Return For City Clash

Sunday’s top-of-the-table Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield will involve a special guest of honour after it was confirmed that injured Reds fan Sean Cox will be in attendance.

Cox suffered severe brain injuries when he was attacked by a group of AS Roma supporters prior to a UEFA Champions League semi-final game at Anfield in April 2018.

The 54-year-old has been receiving treatment in the Republic of Ireland for the past 18 months but recently moved to a neurological facility in England to begin a 12-week rehabilitation programme aimed at developing his speech and movement.

In February this year, Italian fan Simone Mastrelli pleaded guilty to attacking Cox and was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

This will be the first time Cox will be returning to Anfield since the attack.

"We're delighted to welcome Sean and his family back to Anfield," Liverpool’s chief executive Peter Moore said.

"I am sure it will be an emotional return for the family; however, the club has worked closely with the Cox family to ensure that their visit is made as easy as possible, and that they are given all the space and comfort that they need.

"The way that our fans have supported Sean and the Cox family is a testament to their commitment to the LFC family, and we know this will be the case again on Sunday."

Liverpool have made an unbeaten start to the season with ten wins and one draw from their eleven games and will move nine points clear of the champions with victory over Manchester City on Sunday.
