Atletico Madrid President Hits Out At Man City For Defensive Approach

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has hit out at Manchester City for employing defensive tactics in their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday.

The two teams played out an ill-tempered goalless draw at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium which saw the English side progress 1-0 on aggregate to the semi-finals, where they will face Real Madrid.

City manager Pep Guardiola criticised Atletico's defensive approach in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium when Kevin De Bruyne's strike gave the hosts a slim advantage.

Atletico did not manage a single shot on that occasion and Guardiola labelled their approach as 'pre-history'.

As Atletico chased an equaliser in the return leg, City frustrated them with their own defensive reselience which resulted in Felipe getting sent off for hacking down Phil Foden in the closing stages.

Cerezo has taken the opportunity to hit back at Guardiola for employing tactics he had previously spoken against.

“We are a team that has a lot of status so someone can offend us, but in the end it has been shown that everyone has their prehistory," Cerezo told Radio Marca.

“We played a good game, attacking, and City yesterday played prehistory, defending and put a wall in front of their goal so we wouldn't score.

“Everybody has seen it. City was a completely defensive team. In the second half they shot on goal once. Yesterday it was shown that each one has their prehistory.

“It was a match that, with a bit of luck, would have taken us to the semi-finals. We were not lucky enough to score a goal and reach extra-time.”
