Romero On Par With Ederson And Alisson – David James

Ex-England shot-stopper David James insists Manchester United’s second-choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero is as good with the ball at his feet as Manchester City and Liverpool’s respective goalkeepers Ederson and Alisson.

Ederson and Alisson have been lauded for their ability to start attacks from the back with their incisive passes.

Alisson won the FIFA Best Men’s goalkeeper award following a successful year with Liverpool in the Champions League and the Brazil national team in the Copa America.

Ederson on the other hand was part of the Manchester City team that won the domestic treble in 2018/2019 season.

Romero has played second fiddle to David De Gea since his arrival at Old Trafford in June 2015.

The Argentine has played in the Europa League and Carabao Cup so far this season, and has only made seven Premier League appearances for Manchester United since his arrival.

The 32-year-old will replace injured David de Gea in goal for United’s upcoming game against Liverpool on Sunday and David James believes Romero is more than capable of filling in for the Spaniard.

“I've analysed him and there are a few keepers who are highly-rated who just put the ball out there in a general area. But he's as good as Ederson and Alisson using his left foot and right foot,” James told Goal.

“David de Gea is, of course, the number one, but I looked at Romero when Manchester United bought him and I was amazed at how good the guy is with his feet – then I saw an improvement in De Gea.

“What you tend to find is when you've got two keepers or two players training with each other day in, day out, you start picking up positive habits from the other player.”

Romero will go into the game in high spirits, having never conceded a goal in three Premier League outings at Old Trafford.
