Italy Urge UEFA To Change 2020 Champions League Final Venue

Italy Urge UEFA To Change 2020 Champions League Final Venue

Italy's Minister for Sport, Vincenzo Spadafora, has written a letter to UEFA asking for a change in venue for the 2020 Champions League final which will be held in Turkey.

The final showpiece for Europe’s premier club competition is set to be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Basaksehir, Istanbul.

This comes after players of the Turkish national team celebrated their goal against Albania in the EURO 2020 qualifiers last week with a military salute in support of their country’s military forces who are in Syria for operation against the Kurds.

Turkey players again celebrated Kaan Ayhan's goal in similar fashion during their 1-1 draw against France on Monday night.

“We must consider at this time whether it is appropriate [for Turkey to host the final] due to the very serious acts against the Kurdish civilian population,” the letter read.

"We must make the bravest decision and show, once again, that football is an instrument for peace."

According to the Vice President of UEFA Michele Uva, the organisation are considering changing the venue for the Champions league final from Turkey after what happened on Friday and Monday.

'We will play our part in full respect of the autonomy and independence of sport, but we certainly cannot replace the UN, EU, States, diplomacies, ambassadors and other political institutions,' he told Tuttomercatoweb.

The Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Turkey last hosted the Champions League final in 2005 when Liverpool came from three goals down to defeat AC Milan on penalties to lift what was their fifth European crown.
