Perez Refuses To Slam Zidane Over His Farewell Letter

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has refused to criticize outgone head coach Zinedine Zidane despite the Frenchman’s open letter which stated his reasons for leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.

Zidane brought an end to his second tenure as Real Madrid head coach after Los Blancos ended the 2020/2021 season without winning a trophy.

The 49-year-old stated the reason why he left his post in the Spanish capital, insisting he did not feel the backing of the board especially Perez.

Many Real Madrid legends and pundits castigated the French coach for showing lack of respect to the Spaniard but Perez has moved in to defend Zidane, saying he doesn’t believe the former France international wrote the letter despite admitting he has not read it.

"I know him [Zidane] and it has been a hard year, I fought for him to stay," Perez told Onda Cero's Transistor programme.

"I have not read the farewell letter, I swear on my grandchildren. The person who wrote that letter was not Zidane.

"I wish him well, he has been a legend for Real Madrid and he has all of our recognition, he has the dream of being the French coach and I'm sure he will achieve it."

Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti has been rehired to replace Zidane and his tenure will start this summer ahead of the 2021/2022 season.
