Jones Hoping To Impress Solskjaer In Europa League

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is hoping to grab a regular starting spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first eleven by impressing in the Europa League.

Jones has lost his place in the Manchester United starting line-up following the arrival of Harry Maguire from Leicester City in the summer.

Maguire’s arrival shot the number of central defenders at Old Trafford to seven but the departure of Chris Smalling to AS Roma on a season-long loan and Eric Bailly’s knee injury has whittled down the number to five.

Maguire and Victor Lindelof have started all five of United’s Premier League games so far but with Europa League and Carabao Cup fixtures coming up, fringe players like Jones, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe will likely get some minutes.

Jones, who joined Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, is relishing the chance to weave his way into Solskjaer’s plans if given the chance in their Europa League campaign, which begins with a home game against Astana on Thursday.

"There are players like myself who've not been involved as much, but it's a chance for everyone to get games," Jones told United's official match programme.

"It's a busy period when all the games come thick and fast, when you need a big squad with everyone ready to fight. But it's a period we relish."

"Since I came to this club – when I walked through the door – I knew I wasn't just going to walk into the team and expect to play," the 27-year-old added.

"Today's no different. Of course I want to play, but we've got some quality players in that position. I'll wait for my chance and hopefully I'll get a chance sooner rather than later."
