Morientes Bestows Real Madrid Legendary Status On Keylor Navas

Former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes has advocated for Paris Saint Germain’s current number one goalkeeper Keylor Navas to be regarded as a Los Blancos legend.

On the back of some strong performances for Costa Rica at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Navas secured a high profile move to the Santiago Bernabeu from Levante.

Navas jostled for a spot between the sticks with Iker Casillas in his first season at the club but once the Spain great departed for FC Porto in the summer of 2015, the Costa Rican became the undisputed number one at Real Madrid.

In his five years in the Spanish capital, Navas won three UEFA Champions League titles, one La Liga trophy, one Spanish Super Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and four FIFA Club World cups.

The arrival of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in 2018 limited Navas’ first team chances, and the 33-year-old departed for Paris Saint Germain last year.

Navas’ contributions to the Real Madrid course have not gone unnoticed, and Morientes has reserved some fond words for the shot stopper.

"In the end, for example, at Real Madrid I tell you that he is a legend," Morientes told ESPN.

"A player like him who has participated in great moments in Madrid must be classified as legends, without any doubt."

"Keylor Navas came as a substitute player for a great goalkeeper in our history as Iker Casillas was."

"Little by little he gained the respect of the entire public, but he was also decisive in great moments in the history of the Bernabeu."

Navas has already won his first league title in France after PSG were crowned champions when the season was ended early because of the coronavirus pandemic.
