Poyet Backs Mourinho To Succeed At Spurs

Former Tottenham and Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet has backed Jose Mourinho to vindicate his appointment by winning trophies with Tottenham Hotspur.

Mourinho was drafted in to replace Mauricio Pochettino who was relieved of his duties by club chairman Daniel Levy in November.

In Pochettino’s five-and-a-half years in North London, he transformed Spurs into title contenders, top four regulars and reached the Champions League final last season, where they were tamed by fellow Premier League side Liverpool.

Despite helping Tottenham to be a force to reckon with in English football, Pochettino could not win a trophy, reason why Mourinho, a man who is known for winning silverware everywhere he goes was appointed at the expense of the Argentine tactician.

Poyet is confident the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss will bring success to the Lilywhites.

"It's difficult to say if it was right or wrong [to sack Pochettino] because you don't know what the board was thinking," the Uruguayan told Stats Perform.

"From outside, it looks like, okay, they were through a spectacular five years with Pochettino, who did incredible things and the way he made that team play football and the way he was able to keep the momentum and get into a Champions League final in an incredible year, with incredible games. “

"But they decided to change that and go more for a manager [Mourinho] who looks to win things, which is what the Tottenham fans were looking for. “

"Now, if it was right or wrong, time will tell. What I say in the time he did the job is, if you give him three years at the club, I will be surprised if he doesn't win a trophy. I will be very surprised.”
