Ferdinand Calls For Premier League Season To Be Voided

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has called for the Premier League season to be truncated amid coronavirus concerns.

English football and other big European leagues have been suspended following the rapid spread of Covid-19 across Europe sub-regions.

The Football Association has set a new date for the Premier League to resume, but the season remains under constant threat as the virus is showing no signs of recoiling.

Ferdinand believes health takes precedence over football, and has called for the season to be annulled if need be.

Having played for Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United during his heydays, the former England defender admits the Red’s fans will not be happy with his candid opinion, as they are looking to win their first Premier League title.

“Times like this does push it home how important sport, contact, and communication is when you are isolated and alone with your immediate family,” the 41-year-old told BT Sport.

“But we have to take into consideration football is just a game.”

“As seriously as we all take it, the bigger picture is what is going on out in society.”

“I’m sure in my own mind that if it’s not going to be an immediate fix in the next few weeks then the season needs to be voided and started again next season afresh.”

“A lot of people like Liverpool fans will always say, ‘Oh that’s because you don’t want Liverpool to win the league’.”

“Listen, if my team was in that situation I would think about people’s health and the wider society rather than my own gain.”

“There are going to be people disappointed, and there are going to be people that are probably more satisfied with that.”

“So not everyone can win in this situation and that’s just a fact.”
