UEFA President Warns 2019/2020 Season Could Be ‘Lost’

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has warned that the 2019/2020 season could be ‘lost’ if the various leagues around Europe cannot restart by the end of June.

The Coronavirus pandemic has ground the various European leagues, bar the Belarus top flight, to a halt with several players and club officials testing positive for the virus.

The suspended leagues have been earmarked to resume by the end of April but with the virus showing slow signs of going away, the resumption could be extended further.

"Nobody knows when the pandemic will end," Ceferin told Italian daily La Repubblica.

"We have a plan A, B or C: to restart in mid-May, in June or at the end of June.

"If then we wouldn't be able to do any of these, the season would probably be lost. There is also the possibility of ending this season at the start of the next, which would then be postponed, starting a little later.

"We're in touch with the leagues, the clubs, there is a working group and we'll see what solution is best for all. We have to wait, like any other sector."

One of the propositions to complete the season will be to play games behind closed doors and while Ceferin is not too comfortable with the idea, he admits that could be the only way forward.

'It's hard for me to imagine all the matches behind closed doors, but we still don't know whether we'll resume, with or without spectators. If there was no alternative, it would be better to finish the championships anyway,' he added.
